Itinerary
Start from Negombo or Colombo at 7 am. Take a 4 hour drive to Dambulla. Afterwards, have lunch. Afternoon climb Sigiriya Rock. Return back to Negombo to Colombo for dinner.
Dambulla
The Golden Temple of Dambulla, also known as the Dambulla cave temples, is a popular tourist destination located in the central region of Sri Lanka. This site has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its significant historical and cultural value. It is situated approximately 148 kilometers east of Colombo and 72 kilometers north of Kandy. The temple complex is renowned for its collection of Buddha images and rock paintings that date back to the Anuradhapura era in the 2nd Century BC and continue up to the Kandyan era of the 18th Century. This impressive timeline spans over 2500 years, showcasing the evolution of Sri Lankan painting styles over time.
Sigiriya
Sigiriya is an old fortress made of rock. It can be found in the Matale District in the north, close to the town of Dambulla in Central Province, Sri Lanka. There are different ways to get to the inner city, but the most well-known one is through the Western entrance. Once you reach the top of the rock, you can see the surrounding land for many miles around. This made it difficult for enemies to launch surprise attacks on the kingdom. King Kashyapa built this incredible structure, along with the impressive water garden facing the west, which can be seen from the top terrace of the rock.
You can also see the famous paintings of the “heavenly maidens” on the western side of the rock. Moreover, you can enjoy the fountains of the western water garden, which continue to work even during the rainy season and up until the present day.
